إن تطهير حمص عرقياً والمباشرة باستكمال تطهير الساحل لا يعني أن النظام على وشك التخلّي عن المناطق التي ما تزال واقعة تحت سيطرته في الشمال والشمال الشرقي والجنوب، لكن النظام بات على استعداد للقيام بذلك عند الاضطرار، فهذا الأمر سيبقى الأسد رئيساً وإن لقسم من سوريا وبالتالي جزءاُ أساسياً من المشهد السياسي في المنطقة إلى ما شاء الله. وسيكون هذا القسم من سوريا خاضعاُ للحماية الروسية والإيرانية، مما سيعقّد إمكانية إيجاد أي حل عسكري، حتى من خلال تدخل دولي. الخيار المطروح اليوم هو بكل بساطة: إما الأسد أو التقسيم.

Syrian opposition activists tell me that the Russian Embassy in Washington has scheduled several meetings with different factions of the external opposition. “The Russians offer power-sharing with Assad,” says a leading Syrian human-rights and pro-democracy activist, Ammar Abdulhamid. “They want to push the opposition to talk to the regime.”

Abdulhamid said Russian Embassy officials “told opposition activists: ‘The Americans won’t help you. You had better come to us.’ “
