My Lingering Faith in Humanity

My faith in humanity is premised on the empirical observation that she still exists many millennia after the first self-aware hominids emerged on the scene, and that she even made much progress, not only in terms of technology, but also perception and general outlook on life. But if I were to make a judgment on humanity on the basis of my own personal experiences and observations, I would probably be tempted to conclude that humanity is overall decrepit and unable to survive for long. That’s why empirical evidence and objective analysis are far more relevant when drawing general conclusions about life and being than personal experience, which is often tainted and lacking. More importantly, this is exactly why one needs to look beyond oneself and one’s own experiences in life and try to communicate and learn from others. The same applies to groups. Indeed, groups that refuse to learn from others doom themselves to irrelevance and extinction. For survival and progress are collective AND interactive processes.

Indeed, Tony Badran. Iran’s policies and strategies have little to do with Israel and America and more to do with the usual competition/struggle involving Arabs, Persians and Kurds, or Sunnis and Shia, and the usual power politics inside each country and region. In other words, it’s an extension of our indigenous historical processes that have been going for centuries, if not millennia. Israel’s presence and US policies (not mention Europe’s, Russia’s and China’s, etc.) in the region are complicating factors at best, but the dynamics themselves are fueled by internal needs and interests. It’s about time we reexamined the modern history of our region from this perspective, and countered the ideological interpretations prevalent all around us, because they distort facts and detract our attention from focusing on the real nature of our problems, and suggesting more practical policies for handling them.

* لست أدري إن كنت قد ولدت خارج السرب أو نفيت إلى هناك لاحقاً، لكني مازلت أرفض التحليق بعيداً عنه في هذه المرحلة، مع مافي ذلك من أسر بالنسبة لي، لأنه ماتزال عندي رغبة في التأثير فيه، في تفاعلاته، في صيروراته. أهي بقايا الانتماء التي تدفعني لذلك، أم هي الرغبة في الانتماء ذاتها لأني لم أنتمِ إلى السرب يوماً؟ لست أدري.

* لافرق بين مسايرة القدر ومعاندته أحياناً، فالفعل المطلوب في كلتا الحالتين هو ذاته: الاستمرار.

* أخلع الحقد عني وأمضي، لا تليق بي الأسمال، ولا أخجل من عري روحي مهما شاخت وترهّلت.
