– غريب: الناشطون الذين تجولوا بين القتلى وحملوا جثث الأطفال بأيديهم تجنّبوا، حتى وهم غارقون في الحزن والأسى والدماء، توجيه أية دعوة إلى الثأر أو أية محاولة للتجييش الطائفي، واكتفوا بدعوة العالم لمساعدتهم، في حين نسمع الدعوات الطائفية تتكاثر في صفوف بعض من هم في المهجر، هل لأنهم عاجزون عن المشاركة في المعركة؟ ربما، وبوسعي أن أفهم غضبهم بالطبع. لكن كلامي عن التسامح والمثل لاقى تقبلاَ أكثر ممن هم في الداخل، ورأوا فيه تذكيراً وليس تنظيراً، وهم يعرفون تماماً أن الدفاع عن النفس والنضال المسلّح شيء، والثأر والمجازر شيء آخر. أنا لا أن أدعي أن المشاعر الطائفية غير مؤجّجة عند ثوارنا في الداخل، وأن الأخطاء لا تقع، لكني أقول بأن قدرة الناشطين في التسامي عليها وفي ضبط النفس ما تزال هي الأقوى، وما يزال القول الفصل لها. وهنا منبع الأمل.

A 718-page digital document obtained by Mother Jones contains names, phone numbers, neighborhoods, and alleged activities of thousands of dissidents apparently targeted by the Syrian government. Three experts asked separately by Mother Jones to examine the document—essentially a massive spreadsheet, whose contents are in Arabic—say they believe that it is authentic. As Bashar al-Assad’s military continues a deadly crackdown on dissent inside the country, the list appears to confirm in explicit detail the scale of the regime’s domestic surveillance and its methodical efforts to destroy widespread opposition.
