The New World Mayhem

First posted on my short-lived blog Tharwalizations. 

The main hallmark of the emerging World Order is the utter universal lack of capable and inspiring leaders and visions. The complex task of managing a hard yet necessary transitional period in the history of humanity, a coming to terms with our global unity and interdependence and their implications, is left in the hand of mediocre leaders who have neither the prerequisite abilities nor vision nor plans to shape the current unfolding of events and developments. For this, we are bound to continue to stumble on from one seemingly manageable crisis to another and from one all too avoidable war to another until things get completely out of hand and we find ourselves immersed in a global conflict whose tragic consequences are bound to shape our collective memories for millennia to come.

Few personal notes on the making of suicide bombers

Much has been written and said about the phenomenon of suicide bombing recently, and though only recently launched, the Tharwa Commentary could not but address the issue. الحرية والتخاذل – 2

الفارابي: في الواقع، وبغض النظر عن تعريفنا للخير والشر، وهو موضوع هام بحدّ ذاته، ولم تكن إثارته في هذا السياق عبثية على الإطلاق، تبقى مسألة الحرية العامة مرتبطة بالإرادة الشعبية، وفي هذا الصدد تحضرني المقولة التالية للقاضي الأمريكي لويس براندايس (1856 – 1941): “أعظم خطر يواجه الحرية:  الشعب الخامل.” Continue reading “الحرية والتخاذل – 2” →

إسأل “كيف؟” لا “متى؟”

لماذا كلّما طالبنا بالتغيير قيل لنا: “ليس هذا هو الوقت المناسب”؟ متى يأتي الوقت المناسب؟ بل هل هناك وقت مناسب؟

فيما يتعلّق بمن أسّسوا وجودهم على استغلال الوضع الراهن، بكلّ ما فيه من أخطاء بل لما فيه من أخطاء، يبدو من الواضح أن الوقت المناسب لن يأتي أبداً، وأن التغيير الوحيد الذي يمكن أن يهتمّوا به هو التغيير الذي يكرّس لقبضتهم على السلطة (السياسية والاقتصادية والاجتماعية) ويزيد من مكاسبهم. أما فيما يتعلّق بعامة الشعب، فالرغبة في التغيير تصطدم دائماً بحاجز كبير من الخوف، ليس فقط الخوف من المجهول، بل الخوف من المعلوم أيضاً، ألا وهو القمع الذي لا بدّ وأن يواجه كل محاولة جادة للتغيير ولا بدّ وأن ينال كلّ الناشطين في سبيل التغيير.
