Angelina Jolie shows that she understands that the crisis in Syria was mishandled from the beginning, and complains against the continued lack of political will to do anything about it, noting that the situation there and throughout the region has now grown too complex. And she said all this without antagonizing the Obama Administration. Very smart on her part. I, on the other hand, cannot afford to be that smart. Somebody should call an ass an ass, otherwise not enough people might see it. To me, Obama has no clothes, and it’s not a pretty sight.

أننا لا نزال نعيش اليوم في عالم لايتردّد فيه صناع القرار كثيراً فيما يتعلّق باستخدام القتل الجماعي كأداة مقبولة لتحقيق مصالحهم، إما عن طريق الانخراط المباشر، أو التلكوء والتجاهل. عالم لا يزال فيه من الممكن التغاضي عن وقوع انتهاكات جسيمة لحقوق الإنسان إذا ما كان الجناة قادرين على “خلق المشاكل” خارج حدود مناطقهم المعترف بها.

The Real Red Line for Human Rights Activists

This charter was adopted by all members of the UN, why should it be naive to pressure them into respecting it?

At end of the day, this is what really needs to matter most in the minds, hearts and what goes for soul of human rights and prodemocracy activists all over the world:

that we still live in a world where decision-makers everywhere are still at ease with the use of mass murder as an acceptable instrument of advancing or fending for one’s interests, and where massive human rights violations are still subject to neglect if the perpetrators are powerful enough to “cause trouble” beyond their borders.

داعش الغريبة

تمثل الدولة الإسلامية في العراق والشام منظمة متطورة لها رؤيتها الخاصة لتي تسعى إلى فرضها على سكان بلاد الشام بالحديد والنار، تمااص كمعظم القوى على الساحة. لكن، وبسبب كثرة اللاعبين وتشابك الملفات، يبقى الوضع الحالي في المنطقة وضع سائل جداً وشديد التعقيد، مما يخلق فرصاً كثيرة لظهور أنواع مختلفة من التحالفات الانتقالية الغربية، بصرف النظر عن الطريقة التي يتم بها التفاوض عليها بين الأطراف المختلفة، وبصرف النظر عن العداءات الإيديولوجية، إذ لاتهدف هذه التحالفات إلى إنهاء حالة العداء بين الأطراف، بل إلى تحقيق أهداف قريبة المدى، منها إخلاء الساحة من الخصوم الآخرين، وفي هذه الحالة القوى الأكثر اعتدالاً، وبالتالي قدرة على التواصل مع المجتمع الدولي للتحصّل على دعمه في مرحلة ما.
