A Note on Apathy

Apathy is probably one of the most puzzling and serious social diseases affecting regional youth these days. Yet, we can blame economic conditions and the local fear culture, stemming out of authoritarian predilections of ruling regimes and the potential for ethnic strife in some cases, only so much before we have to stop and consider the involvement of other factors in this matter as well. For fear and economic hardships only represent the inhibitive side of the equation, while human behavior is equally shaped by motivating factors. Indeed, the lack of credible leaders and the lack of a promising vision of the future, both of which are necessary factors for inspiring people into action, seem to be involved here as well. ملاحظة حول التخاذل

تشكّل مشاعر التخاذل والتقاعس المنتشرة في الوساط الشبابية في المنطقة واحدة من أخطر الأمراض الأجتماعية التي تهدد مستقبل المنطقة. لكنا، لا يمكننا أن نتكفي في محاولاتنا اليائسة لتفسير هذه الظاهرة بإلقاء اللوم على الأوضاع الاقتصادية وثقافة الخوف الناتجة عن الاستبداد السياسي أو الخوف من الفوضى والوبال الذي يمكن أن تعود علينا به العمليات التغييرية عندما لا تتوفر الأوجه الناسبة لتوجيهها وقيادتها. وهذه الملاحظة تقودنا إلى مواجهة الجزء الآخر من المعادلة هنا، فالسلوك الإنساني لا يشكّل فقط عبر عوامل الإثباط، التي تمثلها الأوضاع الاقتصادية السيئة وثقافة الخوف، بل يتم تشكيله أيضاً عبر عوامل التحريض، وهي غائبة عن الصورة هنا، وربما كان غيابها هو السبب الأكبر وراء التخاذل والتقاعس الذي نراه بين صفوف الشباب. إن غياب الرؤية المستقبلية الواعدة والأوجه القايادية المقنعة، والتي يمكن لها أن تشكّل العوامل التحريضية المطلوبة، تبدو هي لب المشكلة. ولو كانت الرؤى والشخصيات الإسلامية والقومية كافية لسد هذا الفراغ، لتم أسلمة المنطقة أو لنجح الطرح القومي منذ عقود خلت.

Previous “Islamist” attacks in Syria have always looked suspicious, even staged, to most onlookers and analysts, their particular sympathies, be they pro-regime or anti-regime, notwithstanding. The reason for this was the choice of target, namely: empty buildings. Of Freedom and Stability

First posted on my short-lived blog Tharwalizations.

We should give as much thought to the issue of quality with regard to the peace and stability that many of us are advocating and holding on to, as we do to the consequences of change and instability. After all, the search for freedom, progress prosperity and justice is no longer reconcilable, if it has ever been, with the status quo in our part of the world, and does indeed pose a serious challenge to it.
