The First Six Months

Every analytical piece dealing with the Obama Administration policy on Syria has so far glossed over the administration’s baffling lack of action in the first six months of the revolution. Perhaps because any attempt at an explanation will open the door wide for all sorts of conspiracy theories. The alternative is to believe that the Administration has many morons in its upper ranks, in addition to the President himself. I lean towards believing in this alternative.

ما يعتصر الروح في زمن الفتنة هذا اصرار كل طرف على التآمر على نفسه ظاناً أنّه يكيد للطرف للآخر، فيقع ضحية لأكاذيبه ذاتها ولحقده وسوء تدبيره. وأسوأ ما في الأمر انسياق الجموع في كل طرف وراء ذات النخب والشخصيات المفلسة التي مهّدت الطريق للفتنة والتي لا تتوقّف لحظة عن استغلالها وتجييرها لخدمة مصالحها الخاصة التي لا تنسجم بأية حال مع المصلحة العامة للطرف الذي تدّعي تمثيله. لحظة واحدة من الصدق مع النفس قد تقلب المعادلة، لكن الصدق مع النفس كان ويبقى عملة نادرة في صفوفنا. المخاوف والأحقاد تبقى أقوى وأعمق من أي لحظة عابرة من الصدق. لكن الحلّ لأزمتنا يبقى مرتهناً بقدرة كلّ طرف على قلب الموائد ضد المؤجّجين الحقيقيين لهذه الأحقاد والمسعّرين الحقيقيين لهذه النيران، فهم من يجب أن يدفع الثمن، فما لم يتكفّل كل طرف بالتصدّي لشياطينه لن يتحقّق السلام وستبقى الشياطين جاثمة على صدورنا تقتات على دمائنا وتتندّر وتقهقه.

The Obama Administration is using the fruits of its own failed policies, namely the rise of extremist forces in Syria and the entrenchment of Assad, to justify continued adherence to these same policies – an attitude which represents the pinnacle of hypocrisy and cynicism.
