Many of my colleagues tend to feel quite disheartened whenever a Syrian-American or a Syrian-European rapprochement seems to be looming, and with good cause. After all, their freedom and the quality of their lives, not to mention their very lives, seem to hang in the balance, their particular stands vis-à-vis US interventionism, the West in general and West-assisted efforts at democratization, notwithstanding. Swing Back Sweet Pendulum!

The diplomatic battle for Syria goes on. The last few months witnessed developments that seemed favorable for the Assads regime. Indeed, official attitudes and statements did reflect a certain growing confidence, and more than the usual tone of defiance. A certain hubris was clearly visible in such idiotic assertions to the effect that the Assads have managed to isolate the Bush Administration rather than the other way around. Well, whatever! I say “Hey! What’s Going On?”

What did Ibrahim “Abe” Suleiman really accomplish by his “historic” visit to Israel? Did he pressure the Israelis into softening their stance with regard to the Assadian overtures for peace? Or did he just embarrass the Syrian leadership, especially Bashar, and set the whole peace process back? – Because to talk to the Israelis now is going to tantamount to suicide for Bashar?
