And now we can add Syria and the Central African Republic to the mix
He broke his promise on Darfur. He broke his promiseon the Armenian Genocide. He broke the promise he made while president to uphold a certain redline in Syria. In fact, he remained quite indifferent to the unfolding genocide there waxing philosophical at one point and saying:
“And how do I weigh tens of thousands who’ve been killed in Syria versus the tens of thousands who are currently being killed in the Congo?”
“At this point, the U.S.’s core interests in the region are not oil… Our core interests are that everybody is living in peace . . . that children are not having barrel bombs dropped on them, that massive displacements aren’t taking place.”
Back in 2007, presidential hopeful Barack Obama made a promise that as President of the United States he would never “turn a blind eye on slaughter.” Indeed, this is the one promise no leader of the free world should ever fail to make and should never ever break. Candidate Obama clearly made it, then, as President, he repeatedly broke it. History will judge. This is not simply a stain on his legacy, this is a stain on his sense of humanity and honor. It is also a stain on ours for our failure to get him to act. History will not be kind to us as well. History cares little for our intentions.
[dropcap]M[/dropcap]any of the supporters of the Obama Doctrine are appalled by what is clearly a cynical policy of fear-mongering by the right, one that is more concerned with galvanizing the power-base than it is with explain the facts of the world we live into them. But, the supporters argue, while the world might indeed be going through a turbulent and violent phase right now, America is actually quite safe.
The danger that a nuclear-armed Iran would pose to the region and the world is directly related to these weapons. Iran may never actually deploy these weapons or even threaten to deploy them against her perceived enemies, but having them might make her feel freer to embark on a more aggressive and expansionist foreign policy, including providing support to a growing assortment of rogue regimes, sectarian militias, death squads and terrorist networks under the belief that her nuclear arsenal would shield her from any serious repercussions.
