Guantanamo is a disgrace. No one can deny that, and the recent ruling to the effect that the Bush administration had violated both American military law and the Geneva Convention in ordering the military tribunals comes as an official endorsement of point of view. Indeed, and due to the fact that such a glaring abuse of human rights is being perpetrated by the very administration that is supposed to champion the cause of democracy and human rights around the world should naturally be noted and condemned by people from around the world. The Fire & The Works!

The 4th of July fireworks at the National Mall were an amazing display indeed, enough to satiate the personal egos of a thousand Chinese emperors, though there was nothing really egoistical about it. The patriotic songs that we heard in the background, all celebrated the beauty of the homeland or, as is the case with the national anthem, a certain captured moment of inspiration in the midst of a decisive battle. كيف نغلق جوانتانامو

جوانتانامو عار كبير على جبين أمريكا، لا يختلف إثنان في هذا الأمر، وربما جاء قرار المحكمة العليا الأخير كنوع من التصديق الرسمي في هذا الصدد. لكن، ربما كان على شعوب الشرق الأوسط أن تركز جلّ انباهها على السجون الموجودة في ربوعها و يتجنّبوا الوقوع في فخ انتقاد الخارج في هذه المرحلة. لأن القوى القمعية والظالمة في الداخل هي التي استجلبت كل هذا التدخل الخارجي. فالظلم يولّد الجهل، والخليط الناتج عنهما يستجلب التدخل الخارجي بكل أشكاله لأنه لا يقف عند حد. فالأنظمة الغشمة بحاجة دائمة لافتعال الأزمات مع الخارج لتبرير قبضتها الحديدية ولصرف النظر عنها (وعن فسادها) في آن.

لذا، يبدو جلياً أن نضال المصلحين في المنطقة هو نضال داخلي، وفي حال تمكنّا من إغلاق السجون في ربوعنا لن يكون هناك غوانتانامو آخر في مستقبلنا. فالشعوب الحرة تعرف كيف تصون حريتها وتعرف كيف تتعامل مع العالم الخارجي بشكل يكفل كرامتها ومصالحها.

Aref Dying?

Sources are reporting that Aref Dalilah’s health is failing quickly and that he is liable to collapse at any given moment. Prison doctors have reportedly recommended that he be subjected to a variety of tests and scans,but, so far, prison authorities have not responded to their demands. Judging from the recalcitrance and indifference of the international community with regard to cases of unlawful imprisonment, torture and crackdowns that are currently taking place in Syria, Egypt, Tunisia and elsewhere in the region,Aref Dalilah might as well die of some brain clot or heart attack, or even under torture, and no one will do anything about it, beyond issuing some worn out and meaningless condemnation.
