Indeed, Obama will go down as one of the worst presidents in United States history, irrespective of the domestic accomplishments that his supporters tout. Why? Because his other “domestic” accomplishments are a total disaster.
We’ve have been living in Pax Americana since the end of the Cold War, and by some account since the end of WWII. The proposition advanced by the Obamites that the United States should become a power like any other in the world overlooks the significance of this change both in terms of global security and America’s own. Believing in the inevitable transition into a multipolar world is one thing, letting it unfold in such a disastrous manner is another. The transitional process needs to be managed and managed adroitly. This is America’s role, not Fate.
It’s really mindboggling to see some people, like Fareed Zakaraya among others, keep advocating a more of the same policy even as all mayhem unfolds. But I guess by now, it’s all about ego. The American political system has never been kind to people who publicly admit failure, and much more generous to those who insist that they are right in the face of all evidence to the contrary. Blind bullheadedness often pays off, at least in as far as keeping certain figures in play and giving them second and third chances. Efforts at honest self-review, on the other hand, seldom does, because they are often seen and depicted as signs of weakness and indecision. Politics reward the loudest and the shameless, not the righteous and honest.
