Brief History of A Major Fuckup, but not that anyone involved has shown any signs of remorse: the regime keeps killing with an even greater dose of impunity (albeit by other means), the opposition keeps faltering and fragmenting in a dizzying display of incompetence, and the Obama Administration is still leading events from the devil’s “behind,” or wherever the Hell they remain stuck – surely a cold and dark place reserved from the amoral bastards of history.

Jarba makes one lame point after another, and misses the chance to frame the debate in a manner that reminds people, not shyly but starkly, of what the Assads regime has been doing for close to three years now: perpetrating genocide and in the process encouraging the emergence of terrorist networks and threatening the stability of the region. He should have also reminded leaders of the international community, especially the U.S., Russia and Iran, of their negative impact on this process due to their passivity and/or duplicity.  He should have been shaming and blaming even as he shows willingness to attend Geneva 2. Russians must love Jarba. He’s been “reasonable” and the negotiations haven’t even started. Who’s his media adviser? Whoever he is, he should be fired.

Whether it’s the massacres in Houla, Darya, Bayda, or the chemical weapons attack in Ghoutah, the evidence is overwhelming and the perpetrator known: the Assad regime and its militias. Yet, no one did anything, and world leaders keep speaking of a political solution, as though someone who commits such crimes can be induced to embrace politics, or have not gone beyond the pale. These crimes against humanity are enabled by the crimes perpetrated by world leaders against our sanity and decency. Knowing the truth makes little difference in a world intent on ignoring its responsibility towards it. So a genocide unfolds again, and people rush to bury their heads in the sand, again. Its timing was inconvenient, we are told. O Lord, when we will you grant us criminals who are more considerate? I am sure this is the essence of Obama’s nighttime prayers.
